MISSION AND HISTORY
The Miss Yakima County Scholarship Organization was founded in 2008 as an official preliminary to the Miss Washington and Miss America Scholarship Competitions. The Mission of the Miss America Organization is "To prepare great women for the world, and to prepare the world for great women." The Miss Yakima County Scholarship Organization strives to meet this challenge by providing young women with professional development skills through interview training and resume building. Former titleholders now hold positions as lawyers, business owners, teachers, nurses, and scientists. The Miss Yakima County Organization also strives to award scholarships to enhance the higher education goals of young women. Since its creation, the organization has awarded over $55,000 in cash scholarships to young women in the state of Washington.
Originally, the competition crowned only 2 titleholders, Miss Yakima County and Miss Yakima County Outstanding Teen. These titles were and still are awarded to young women who are Yakima County Residents. However, over the last decade, 3 more titles have been added to the competition to increase the number of scholarships awarded. These include two Miss titles (Miss Apple Valley and Miss Sunfair) and one Teen title (Miss Apple Valley's Outstanding Teen) targeted at former Miss Yakima County titleholders and young women from other areas across the state of Washington. Titles awarded are dependent on contestant numbers and sponsorships.
